Senator Guglielmo Announces Funding for Pomfret Senior Center

September 21, 2004

State Senator Tony Guglielmo, R-Stafford, today said that funding in the amount of $275,000 will be awarded to the Town of Pomfret for the construction of a new Senior Center. According to Senator Guglielmo, the funding is expected to be approved by the State Bond Commission this Thursday at the Commission’s monthly meeting in Hartford. The grant is part of the state’s Small Town Economic Assistance Program (STEAP), which allocates money to economic development, community conservation and quality of life projects.

“This is an important project for the Town of Pomfret,” said Sen. Guglielmo. “This is something that town officials have been working on for some time and I am pleased that the funding has been released so the construction of the new Senior Center can commence.”

Senator Guglielmo said that Town officials estimate the new facility would consist of a 2,500 square foot meeting room with game tables, chairs, and kitchen and bathroom facilities. The $275,000 state grant will compliment the town’s $100,000 contribution of the $375,000 cost of the project.
“I think it’s important to note the administration’s commitment to small towns as well,” said Sen. Guglielmo. “This grant is a clear recognition of the needs of small towns. Pomfret is indeed a small town with a growing senior population and this type of project is what the small town assistance grant program is targeting.”
