Senator Fasano and Rep. Ward Announce Funds for Downtown Revitalization in East Haven

September 15, 2003

State Senator Len Fasano (R-34th) and State Representative Robert M. Ward (R-86th) are pleased to announce that the State Bond Commission is scheduled to award $550,000 for the Downtown Revitalization project in East Haven. These funds, along with $200,000 from the town, are part of Phase I of the three-phase project aimed at beautifying the downtown area for residents and businesses.

“I would first like to thank East Haven mayor Joseph Maturo and Arthur DeSorbo for all their hard work on this project,” said Senator Fasano. “Today’s grant is a huge boost for the town of East Haven residents and the first step in an ambitious project to improve its downtown area. With the state and town working hand in hand, I am optimistic that we will not only help stimulate local commerce, but revitalize the area and draw even more businesses into East Haven.”

Phase I takes place on the south side of Main Street from Thompson Avenue to Hemingway Avenue. Both the state and local funds will be used for a stenciled concrete sidewalk, granite curbing, paving, historic period street lighting, street furniture (benches and trash receptacles), landscaping improvements as well as upgrades to the Town Hall and Town Hall Cupola.

“The key to revitalization is an attractive downtown and this grant will go a long way towards accomplishing that. The town has made its own financial commitment, and I am happy to see the state support their efforts to help their local merchants,” House Minority Leader Ward said. “With these improvements, both local businesses and residents will benefit.”

The State Bond Commission is scheduled to meet at 10:30 a.m. today at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford.
