Senator Kissel to Speak at Enfield High School
September 19, 2002State Senator John A. Kissel (R-Enfield) will be speaking to students at Enfield High School tomorrow, September 20th, from 10AM to11AM in conjunction with America’s Legislators Back to School Week. The event is sponsored by the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) and involves state legislators from across the country visiting classrooms to talk about the legislature and to observe activities in schools.
“I am looking forward to sharing my experiences at the State Capitol with these students and answering their questions,” said Senator Kissel, who is currently serving his 5th term representing the towns of Enfield, Somers, Suffield, Windsor, and Windsor Locks. “It is a great opportunity to educate future voters and perhaps stimulate their interest in public service.”
Rather than giving students a standard civics lesson on the three branches of government or how a bill becomes a law, the purpose of the week long event is to help students understand the pressures, conflicts and difficulties that legislators deal with in trying to solve public problems.
NCSL introduced the program as a one-day event in 2000, and the response from both legislators and schools was so strong that it was expanded into its current format the following year. The program is endorsed by the American Association of School Administrators and the National School Boards Association, among other organizations.
