Sens. Harding & Berthel: Lamont’s Right to Stand Firm vs. Dems’ Budget $$ Gimmicks

April 12, 2024

Sen. Republican Leader Stephen Harding and Sen. Eric Berthel, Ranking Senator on the Appropriations Committee, today issued the following statement regarding Gov. Ned Lamont’s administration’s unwillingness to sign a budget transfer bill that doesn’t address fiscal holes.

“The governor is right to stand firm against majority Democrats’ budget gimmicks. Connecticut taxpayers deserve that respect. The governor must keep repeating the following truths to his fellow Democrats until he is heard: The state budget must be balanced. It must remain consistent with all statutory and constitutional spending caps. The bipartisan fiscal guardrails that Republicans assisted upon are working. We are paying down on the state’s credit card. We are actually cutting taxes thanks to the guardrails. Predictably, Democrats here in one-party rule Connecticut can’t resist spending more and more of overburdened taxpayers’ money. We wish the governor luck in this fight to protect Connecticut taxpayers’ wallets. He will need it.”
