Senator Hwang Announces Grant Funding Approved for Real Food CT in Newtown

The Connecticut Department of Agriculture has awarded Real Food CT in Newtown $49,999 to purchase a refrigerated shipping container, cooler truck, fencing, well/water hookups for a wash station, food hub software, and produce safety training. Real Food CT connects local farms and hunger relief organizations to provide neighbors in need with the nutrition they deserve. This funding will give Real Food CT state funding to become a Food Hub to better distribute locally grown healthy food to people in need, furthering their important mission.

“I am delighted to announce that Real Food CT has secured this essential funding. They do amazing work to ensure not only that local families don’t go hungry, but also that they receive fresh, healthy, locally grown food for their dinner tables. They will now be able to reach more families, having a greater impact on the local community. I thank the Department of Agriculture for recognizing the vital role served by Real Food CT.” Said Senator Tony Hwang.

“The awarded projects align with agency priorities to diversify who is growing food, where it is being grown, and how it is being grown. From new and expanded youth agriculture curriculums to promotion of farmers’ markets and increasing food and land access, these projects will support a diversified ecosystem of agriculture in Connecticut in the years ahead.”  Said DoAg Commissioner Bryan P. Hurlburt.
