Fasano Slams Democrat Proposals to Create New Connecticut Energy Taxes and Raise the Gas Tax

March 19, 2019

Democrat bills would create new taxes on: home heating oil, electric energy, natural gas, propane, diesel and gasoline

Senate Republican Leader Len Fasano (R-North Haven) today slammed Connecticut Democrats’ proposals to create new taxes on gasoline, home heating oil, natural gas, propane, all other fossil fuels and electric energy bills.

“As part of their continuous effort to tax everyone and everything, claiming it’s for the sake of some cause, Connecticut Democrats are now proposing new crushing energy taxes that will hit everything from home heating oil to gasoline. As if energy rates and the gas tax aren’t high enough already, Democrats now want to add brand new taxes to home heating oil, electric energy, natural gas, propane, diesel and gasoline. This is on top of the massive sale tax increases Democrats are advancing. Enough is enough.

“These taxes are the most regressive taxes one can think of. We all need to heat our homes, keep the lights on and fill our cars with gas. These taxes will hurt the middle class and those with low and fixed incomes the most.

“To add insult to injury, Connecticut Democrats are also proposing a new tax on gasoline, at the same time they are moving full steam ahead with tolls. This is layering tax upon tax on Connecticut residents. Where does it stop?”

“In Connecticut, the Democrats’ ‘Green New Deal’ is defined as taking your money. Democrats tell you that the best way to save the earth is to send your money to the government. They believe that their own ideas of what’s good for us should be imposed on the public by strong arming people with new taxes. If Democrats really think taxing someone is going to curb activity, then why wouldn’t taxing businesses be a concern for them too? The truth is this is a money grab, plain and simple.

“I cannot believe the governor’s administration would support such exorbitant taxation on top of the already crushing level of taxes in his proposed budget. But yet here we are today. New taxes are being proposed daily and the governor remains silent. I hope the governor speaks out against these proposals. Taxpayers have had enough.”

New taxes proposed by Connecticut Democrats include:

  • New tax on electric bills of one mill per kilowatt hour to fund a “CT Earth Bank” (H.B. No. 6646)
  • New tax on home heating oil (S.B. No. 1064)
  • New tax on gasoline (S.B. No. 1064)
  • New tax on propane (S.B. No. 1064)
  • New tax on diesel fuel, jet fuel, and all other fossil fuels (S.B. No. 1064)
