HARTFORD, Conn. – On Tuesday June 19, State Senator Heather Somers (R-Groton) received a legislative service award at The Arc New London County Annual Meeting and Picnic for her efforts on behalf of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and their families throughout Southeastern Connecticut.

“Senator Somers has demonstrated time and again that she is a friend to people with IDD as well as a friend to those of us who serve people with IDD. She takes the time to learn about the unique challenges of our families, and she is an incredible champion in supporting real work for real pay for people with IDD. She genuinely wants people with IDD to live better, more independent lives here in Southeastern Connecticut,” said Chief Executive Officer of The Arc New London County, Kathleen Stauffer.

Senator Somers accepted the legislative service award on Tuesday, June 19th surrounded by many community advocates, The Arc NLC Staff and members of The Arc NLC.

“I want to thank The Arc New London County for recognizing me this year,” said Sen. Heather Somers, (R-Groton). “It is imperative that people with IDD continue to have a voice for them in our communities and in Hartford. Throughout this legislative session I took time to meet with families, individuals and advocates to better understand the challenges that my fellow community members experience. I am extremely humbled to know that the time I spent didn’t go unnoticed. Most importantly I want all of my IDD friends to know that I will never stop fighting for them, fighting to get them what they deserve and fighting for them to live the best lives they can – the lives they want to live.”
