Sen. Fasano Leads General Assembly in Overriding Governor’s Veto to Restore Funding for Elderly and Disabled

January 31, 2018

Today the General Assembly, in a bipartisan vote, successfully overrode Governor Dannel P. Malloy’s veto of a bill that will restore funding for the Medicare Savings Program.

In voting to override the governor’s veto, Senate Republican President Pro Tempore Len Fasano (R-North Haven) and fellow state lawmakers are now able to restore funding for the current fiscal year to over 100,000 seniors and disabled individuals. The Medicare Savings Program uses Medicaid money to help individuals pay for medical expenses that Medicare does not cover, such as co-pays and premiums.

“Lawmakers worked together in a bipartisan effort to restore this important funding without worsening this year’s deficit,” said Senator Fasano. “Gov. Malloy was wrong to veto this solution in favor of his own plan that violates the constitution and plunges our state further into deficit. I applaud the efforts of lawmakers on both sides of the aisle for doing the right thing and standing up to Gov. Malloy today. We have much more work ahead of us to look at this program in future years and I hope the courage we saw today will persist throughout the legislative session.”

Sen. Fasano worked with fellow legislative leaders to negotiate the bipartisan bill to restore funding for the Medicare Savings Program.
