Sen. Witkos Meets with Avon High School “Girls Who Code” Club during National Computer Science Education Week

In recognition of National Computer Science Education Week (CSEdWeek), Deputy Senate Republican President Pro Tempore Kevin Witkos (R-Canton) visited with the Avon High School “Girls Who Code” Club on Monday December 4.

Sen. Witkos met with a group of students who participate in weekly meetings in which they learn how to code and expand their computing skills.

“I was so impressed by the talents of these students,” said Senator Witkos. “It is wonderful to see our future leaders in the making developing the skills they need to make a big difference in the workforce and to shape the future of technology as we know it. On top of that, it’s great to see so many young women empowered by this organization dedicated to closing the gender gap in technology.”

Girls Who Code is a national organization with student programs throughout the country. It was founded five years ago to help young women learn about technology and computer coding specifically.

CSEdWeek is an annual program dedicated to inspiring K-12 students to take interest in computer science. Every year, it is held in recognition of the birthday of computing pioneer Admiral Grace Murray Hopper, born December 9, 1906. Sen. Witkos has also recently attended a conference that highlighted the growing field of coding and importance in educating the nation’s future workforce.
