Senator John A. Kissel (R-Enfield) helps to serve dinner at a Thanksgiving Celebration Dinner at Enfield Loaves and Fishes

By: Senator John A. Kissel

While many of us here in North-Central Connecticut are fortunate enough to celebrate the Thanksgiving Holiday with friends, family and delicious food – some within our communities are not as fortunate. That’s why it is so important for folks to lend a helping hand during the holidays and help organizations who offer services within our communities.

One of those hard-working organizations is Enfield Loaves and Fishes. They are a local area soup kitchen providing hospitality to all those in need by offering meals, aid and companionship at no charge. Loaves and Fishes is a nonprofit, volunteer program that was incorporated in 1982 and is located in the St. Andrew’s Church Hall at 28 Prospect Street in Enfield. They are staffed almost exclusively by volunteers from the community and operate under the guidance of a Director and volunteer Board of Directors.

Typical Meals Include:

  • Juice
  • Mixed Vegetables
  • Fresh Fruit
  • Chicken with Gravy
  • Rolls and Butter
  • Coffee and Milk
  • Mashed Potatoes
  • Cakes, Pies and Ice Cream

In addition to typical donations, make sure to mark your calendars for an Enfield Loaves and Fishes food drive at the Enfield ShopRite on November 18th and November 19th from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Loaves and Fishes will need volunteers for that day and members of the community are encouraged to reach out to Priscilla Brayson, Director of Enfield Loaves and Fishes, via email at [email protected].
Dinners are served Sunday through Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. They will also be hosting a Thanksgiving Celebration Dinner on November 22nd; doors will open at 3:30 p.m., with meals being served at 4:00 p.m. Loaves and Fishes will need meat, vegetable, fruit and cheese platters to be donated for dinner that day.

Even though organizations like Loaves and Fishes need help all throughout the year – please consider stopping by and lending a helping hand or a few canned goods if you can. This wonderful organization relies solely on the generosity of volunteers and donations.

To donate, stop by, Monday through Friday, between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. or give my good friend Priscilla a call at 860-741-0226 – any contribution is greatly appreciated.
