Senator Somers Documents Mammogram Appointment During Breast Cancer Awareness Month

HARTFORD, Conn. – To raise awareness about early detection and regular screenings State Senator Heather Somers (R-Groton) visited Lawrence + Memorial Hospital part of the Yale system in New London today to document her mammogram using the latest tomosynthesis imaging equipment.
“My goal today was to directly show women that mammograms are quick, easy, and pain-free and with the new technology that is now locally available these screenings can really save lives,” said Sen. Somers.
Senator Somers went to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital for her regularly scheduled mammogram, only with a slight twist – she documented each step of her journey so that women throughout Connecticut, who may be nervous, apprehensive or even having a mammogram for the first time, can see exactly what the appointment is like.
“I know my first appointment I was nervous and uneasy hearing how uncomfortable the test can be, but I can say that has not been my experience. At L+M you can get in and out in about 20 minutes, so it is possible to have a screening done on a break or your lunch hour, and in addition all the outpatient facilities offer evening hours,” said Sen. Somers. “Making sure you have preventive screenings can truly save your life. Connecticut has the highest rate of breast cancer when compared with the rest of the country. This means it’s even more important for every woman to make sure they are getting regular screenings. I would encourage women out there to talk with their physicians to discuss when they should start to have these screenings and how often.”
