Senator McLachlan Applauds Approval of Bipartisan Deficit Mitigation Plan

May 31, 2017

Hartford – State Senator Michael McLachlan (R-24) today praised the bipartisan effort that resulted in a plan to close the $317 million state budget shortfall for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2017.

“With the State Senate tied 18-18 between Republicans and Democrats, the only way to accomplish meaningful legislation that serves the best interests of our state and taxpayers is through cooperation,” Sen. McLachlan said. “The bipartisan deficit plan shows that we can fund vital programs without shortchanging our municipalities and those with disabilities. ”

The Senate plan restores $19.4 million to municipalities by funding the June Pequot Payment, returns about $1 million in money privately raised for state parks, and restores $1 million for employment opportunities and day services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Hospitals will also be held harmless to cuts.

The plan also maintains approximately $30 million in the Rainy Day Fund and moves to the House of Representatives for approval.

Sen. McLachlan represents the communities of Bethel, Danbury, New Fairfield, and Sherman.
