May 3, 2017

HARTFORD, Conn. – Today State Senator John A. Kissel (R-Enfield) stood in support of the passage of House Bill 7254, An Act Requiring Special Education Teachers to Complete a Program of Study in Evidence-Based Structured Literacy Interventions for Students with Dyslexia, on the Senate Floor. The bill has passed in both the Senate and House, and is now headed for the governor’s desk.

“I would like to thank my constituent, Nicole Bacile, for bringing this important legislation to my attention,” said Sen. Kissel. “This bill includes directives for supervised practicum hours and also focuses on the detection and recognition of evidence-based structured literacy intervention. At the end of the day this legislation supports our teachers, which ultimately supports our students.”

“The passage of this bill in both the Senate and House continues to show our commitment to our students, especially those who need qualified, dedicated special education teachers. Knowing how to read is one of the most important skills a student will ever master and any support we can give these students, I am proud to stand behind,” said Sen. Kissel.
