Sen. McLachlan Encourages Vets to Take Advantage of Tax Breaks

December 20, 2016

Sen. Mike McLachlan today encouraged Connecticut veterans and active-duty service personnel to contact their town clerk’s office about special property tax exemptions available to vets.

“It’s unfortunate that all Connecticut veterans and active-duty service members are not taking advantage of the state and local property tax exemptions available to them,” Sen. McLachlan said. “The Connecticut Legislature and some municipalities have created these tax exemptions as a small way to compensate these brave men and women for their service to our country. I would like to see every veteran exercise their right to these benefits.”

State law provides a minimum $1,500 municipal property tax credit to qualified veterans and active-duty service members who meet the 90-day war service requirement. The credit is also available to a veteran’s spouse, as well as a sole surviving parent or minor child of a veteran who died either while serving or after receiving an honorable discharge. Some municipalities also include an additional exemption and may have special exemptions for disabled veterans.

Sen. McLachlan said that in order to receive the property tax exemption, veterans and active-duty personnel must contact the town clerk’s office in their municipality. They will be required to submit certain paperwork to verify their service.

“During these difficult economic times, I’m glad the state is able to offer some financial relief to our service members,” Sen. McLachlan said.
