Fasano: Rep. Aresimowicz Comments on Campaign Finance Changes “The Height of Hypocrisy”

October 27, 2016

Hartford – Senate Minority Leader Len Fasano (R-North Haven) released the following statement in response to comments made today by Representative Joe Aresimowicz about campaign finance laws.

“Representative Aresimowicz’s sudden desire to change state election laws is the height of hypocrisy. Democrats have controlled the state legislature for decades. But over the past six years instead of strengthening clean election laws, they have weakened them. They have voted time and time again to whittle away at the state’s Citizens Election Program. Republicans repeatedly proposed bills to restore the original intent of the state’s Citizen’s Election Program, including a bill that would have required disclosure of donor names, but Democrat lawmakers refused to advance that bill.

“Now Rep. Aresimowicz suddenly has a problem about where money is coming from? If that’s what he truly feels, then why didn’t he raise his voice when money from the state Democratic Party, which is currently under federal investigation, was pumped into state campaigns? Why isn’t he concerned about where that money came from? The feds certainly seem concerned.

“Whether you like it or not, you can’t stop people from voicing political speech. Freedom of speech is a constitutional right. But you can take action to prevent dirty money from making its way into campaigns, and that’s a stand Rep. Aresimowicz has failed to take.”
