Rep. Jesse MacLachlan and Sen. Art Linares on May 4 sent a petition to the Office of the Governor opposing state budget cuts to local education funding.
More than 900 residents have signed the lawmakers’ petition, which stresses that the state budget should not be balanced on the backs of children and on local property taxpayers.
“These measures balance the state’s fiscal mismanagement on the backs of students and hard-working members of our community,” said Rep. MacLachlan. “Our towns deserve predictability from state government. These cuts do not bring reform, they are government turning over every couch cushion.”
The lawmakers said that state government should instead:
- Reduce its massive overtime costs
- Reform its generous pension system
- Make long overdue structural budget changes
- Implement spending reform
“We should be looking at all these areas of irresponsible state government spending before we even think about cutting education funding for our children,” Sen. Linares said.
Rep. MacLachlan represents Clinton, Killingworth and Westbrook.
Sen. Linares represents Chester, Clinton, Colchester, Deep River, East Haddam, East Hampton, Essex, Haddam, Lyme, Old Saybrook, Portland and Westbrook.
