Legislators Applaud DOH Loan for Senior Housing in Tolland

October 27, 2015

TOLLAND – State Representatives Tim Ackert (R-8) and Sam Belsito (R-53) and Senator Tony Guglielmo (R-35) applauded a loan from the Department of Housing (DOH) to the Access Agency, Inc. of Willimantic, to redevelop the vacant former Parker School Elementary School in Tolland into 37 units of affordable senior housing. Two of the units will be specifically set aside for veterans.

The school, located on the Tolland Green, is ideal for this project because of the short walking distance to the municipal offices, the senior center and library. Van service between these locations and the residences will be provided as well.

“Renovating the school to benefit our community’s elderly is a great use of the building and these funds,” Rep. Ackert said. “I am grateful that the DOH has decided to present the Agency with this loan so that they can get started on this important project.”

“I am so happy to see that we have found a use for this empty building that it will benefit Tolland’s seniors,” Rep. Belsito said. “Congratulations to the Agency and all of those involved in making this decision.”

“The project is a home run!” said Sen. Guglielmo. “Any time we can reuse a community asset for the people’s benefit we should. Senior housing is limited; with these new spaces our senior population will have some great options.”
