Thanks to the efforts of Clinton residents Gerry and Margaret Campion, the third week in October has been designated by Gov. Dannel P. Malloy as “Male Breast Cancer Awareness Week” in Connecticut.

Sen. Art Linares and Rep. Jesse MacLachlan co-sponsored a bill in the state legislature this year on behalf of the Campions, who are breast cancer survivors. The bill passed the state Senate unanimously, but never was called for a vote in the House of Representatives. Though the legislation did not become law, the governor has issued a proclamation to help raise awareness of this public health issue.

“By spreading awareness of male breast cancer, we can encourage men to take symptoms seriously, and urge screening from a medical professional,” Sen. Linares said. “That early detection can, and will, save lives.”

“The Campions are doing a tremendous public service by getting the word out about this particular cancer,” Rep. MacLachlan said. “We thank them for their advocacy and we urge people to learn more at www.hisbreastcancer.org .”
