Sen. Fasano: That’s A Drumbeat For Change [Courant]

August 12, 2015

Hartford Courant Letter

House Speaker Brendan Sharkey has accused Republicans of spreading “bad news” about Connecticut’s financial health [Aug. 1, op-ed, “Republican Negativity Hurts Connecticut”].

His criticism shows that he’s not listening to the people struggling in our state and demanding change.

The budget passed this year advances policies that have hurt Connecticut’s economy. Created by Democrats who locked Republicans out of the room during negotiations, the final budget circumvents and exceeds the spending cap, implements the second highest tax increase in state history and burdens the middle class.

Politically, Democrats have no choice but to defend their poor policies now that the budget is law.

So Speaker Sharkey keeps his head in the sand as Connecticut sinks around him. But Republicans will not sit by silently.

If a business implies certain policies could lead to its departure from Connecticut, we will raise our voices.

If jobs leave Connecticut for another state, we will stand up and question the economic climate.

If a competitor comes to our state, we will learn everything we can about them so we can determine what Connecticut needs to do to beat our competition.
Speaker Sharkey is wrong.

Where he hears a “drumbeat of negativity,” Connecticut hears a rallying cry for change.
