Rep. Arthur O’Neill and Sen. Rob Kane on Feb. 24 testified in favor of legislation aimed at providing relief to the residents of Heritage Village.

The legislators testified before the legislature’s Energy and Technology Committee in favor of a proposal to amend state law to establish a partial property tax exemption for the installation or improvement of public service company infrastructure.

“Let me give you an example of a real life situation where this measure would help hundreds and hundreds of state residents,” Sen. Kane said. “We represent the people of Heritage Village in Southbury. Heritage Village residents are facing an extreme burden in order to pay for infrastructure improvements. They face a rate increase of 73.2%. These residents are on fixed incomes. This rate increase would result in annual payment increases of nearly $300 for each resident. Any relief we can provide the people of Heritage Village – and residents throughout Connecticut – would be most welcome.”

“The goal of the legislation is to encourage public service company infrastructure upgrades while reducing the costs passed on to ratepayers,” Rep. O’Neill said.
The bill awaits a vote by the committee. The legislative session ends in June.
