DANBURY – State Representatives Jan Giegler (R-138) and Dan Carter (R-2) and State Senator Michael McLachlan (R-24) Wednesday volunteered as Salvation Army bell ringers to raise money for local families in need during the holiday season.

During the hour-long event outside the Danbury Wal-Mart the veteran lawmakers wished shoppers happy holidays as they collected hundreds of donations totaling a whopping $14,334.83. The store will match their collection dollar-for-dollar, creating a grand total of $28,669.66 that will go directly to the Salvation Army. This is massive improvement from last year’s $3,209.08.

“The outpouring of community support was wonderful and I want to thank everyone who stopped by to offer their donations and season’s greetings,” Rep. Giegler said. “The money we raised will go a long way to helping local families in need during the holidays.”

“We are so lucky to have such an incredible turnout – an enormous thank you goes out to those who took time out of their busy schedules to stop by, say hello and contribute,” Rep. Carter said. “With the help of Wal-Mart’s matching donation, we’re a big step closer to bringing a merrier Christmas to local families in need.”

“We sincerely thank all who donated to help people in need,” Sen. McLachlan said. “Through the Red Kettle Campaign, one person really can make a difference in someone else’s life.”

“It’s common these days to hear more negative than positive news about the men and women who represent us in government. But here in Danbury is it just as common to see those men and women out in the community making a difference,” said Major Todd Hughes of the Danbury Salvation Army. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank State Reps Dan Carter and Jan Giegler, along with State Sen Mike McLachlan, for manning a Red Kettle Stand for The Salvation Army at Walmart in Danbury on Dec. 17. Through the giving of their time they have made a difference in our community by helping The Salvation Army help those who are in the most need this holiday season.”

During similar bell-ringing events from 2009 – 2013, Republican House Representatives raised more than $76, 643.28 which Wal-Mart matched with dollar-for-dollar. Totals for 2014 have not yet been tabulated.
