Sen. Linares statement on passing of Paul DeStefano

Sen. Art Linares today issued the following statement on the passing of former Haddam First Selectman Paul DeStefano:

“My thoughts and prayers go out to Paul DeStefano’s family.

I feel fortunate to have been able to work with Paul on a variety of issues. He was someone I respected and admired. Paul loved Haddam, and he worked tirelessly on behalf of town residents.

Paul and I once spent a rainy morning on Memorial Day weekend at the Haddam Transfer Station collecting torn and tattered U.S. Flags so that they could be properly retired. We thought we would perhaps collect a few dozen flags that day, but to our amazement, more than 3,000 flags were turned in!

I watched Paul closely on that busy day at the transfer station. He had a natural way of interacting with people who were young and old, and of all backgrounds. He did so because he clearly loved serving the community and helping his neighbors in any way he could. He enjoyed public service, and he enjoyed giving back.

That’s what I will remember about Paul. He was always looking to improve the quality of life in Haddam for all residents and for future generations.

I know I speak for many in our region when I say how saddened we are that Paul has passed. At the same time, we are grateful to have known Paul, to have spent quality time with Paul, and to have learned from Paul. We will miss him.
