HARTFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork) – State Senator Art Linares is urging ratepayers throughout Connecticut to sign his petition in opposition of a rate hike being requested by Connecticut Light & Power.

The document, he told WCBS 880′s Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau, will be passed on to state regulators who are deliberating the $220 million hike.

“All across the state, anyone and everyone that wants to get involved, go to my website, SenatorLinares.com,” he said.

Regulators are set to decide on CL&P’s two-step rate hike in January.

Nora Duncan, AARP director in Connecticut, said she’s particularly concerned about the toll the hikes might take on seniors living on limited incomes, some in electrically heated retirementicon1 Senator Urges Ratepayers To Sign Petition In Opposition Of CL&Ps Proposed Rate Hikeapartments.

“It could be upwards of another $20 a month on people’s bills, and there’s no way to get around that by turning down the heat,” Duncan said.

In the meantime, Sen. Linares is urging ratepayers to get a home energy efficiency checkup to make sure everything is being done to prevent heat escaping from their homes.
