NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Controversy is brewing over a new Department of Children and Families policy that allows people listed on the Child Abuse and Neglect Registry a chance to get their names removed.

The registry is consulted by school districts, bus companies, day care providers and even DCF itself to screen potential employees. Now, a State Senator is calling on Gov. Dannel Malloy to make sure Connecticut’s children are protected.

In a letter to the governor, state Sen. Michael McLachlan says the idea to remove names from the registry was originally presented by DCF as a bill earlier this year. But both the House and Senate chose not to take the bill up for vote.

McLachlan says that is when DCF went around the decision to create a change that would “implement a significant change in policy that undermines child safety and welfare.”

McLachlan notes there are also procedures in place to make sure the correct people end up on the registry. He says that includes investigating reported abuse and making sure that report is proven.
