Sen. Witkos, Rep. LeGeyt Host Senior Drivers Fair

April 23, 2014

Collinsville – Senator Kevin Witkos (R-Canton) and Representative Tim LeGeyt (R-Avon, Canton) co-hosted “You’re In the Driver’s Seat,” a resource and informational senior fair about safe driving. The event was sponsored by Canton Senior Center and the SALT Committee (Seniors and Law Enforcement working Together) and held at the Canton Community Center on Tuesday, April 8.

“There are many local and statewide resources that can help drivers stay on the road longer and safer,” said Sen. Witkos. “This event was a great opportunity for seniors and caregivers to learn about available resources, local initiatives and healthcare access that help promote safe driving.”

The fair included free interactive opportunities to learn about the dangers of impaired driving and how to better “fit” yourself to the car you drive. Information was also available on driving and dementia, how to start conversations with your doctor or loved one about driving safety, and information on safe driver discounts.

“It’s so important that we continue to support our seniors with helpful resources and information that will allow them and their families to make informed decisions as they manage issues related to aging,” said Rep. LeGeyt. “I was pleased to co-host this great event and impressed by the many local and statewide agencies who participated and distributed materials. It is my hope that our seniors and their families came away from the Informational Fair with useful information about concerns related to safe driving.”

Attendees also received free eye screenings and took part in reaction time testing to get a better understanding of their driving skills.

Experienced professionals from the following organizations were present: AAA, Alzheimer’s Association, Arden Courts of Avon, AARP Safe Driving, Canton Triad, Canton Police Department, Cherry Brook Healthcare, CT Commission on Aging, CT Dept. on Aging, CT Dept. of Motor Vehicles, McLean of Simsbury, North Central Area Agency on Aging, Canton Senior & Social Services, Lions Club – with Dr. Bonelli, Long Term Care Ombudsman Program, Office of the Healthcare Advocate, WAYTOGOCT, and more.
