February 25, 2014

Hundreds of Connecticut workers are about to lose their jobs.

Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. announced Friday it’s slashing almost 4 percent of its global workforce and most of those on the chopping block work at the Stratford plant.

Sikorsky, the chopper division of United Technologies, makes the Blackhawk and other military and commercial helicopters.

Company spokesman Paul Jackson said the company will cut 600 jobs, mostly in Connecticut, and notices will be going out over the next few weeks.

A company statement saying , “These decisions are always difficult to make but necessary to protect the company’s competitiveness and future.”
Both blue and white collar workers will be laid off.

It’s the second wave of Sikorsky layoffs in less than a year. Last year the company laid off 200 workers.

Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal released a statement Friday saying. “I will continue my focus on growing and protecting good, high-skilled manufacturing jobs…and work with Sikorsky leadership as they develop…plans to keep these jobs in Connecticut.”

Also on Friday Sikorsky announced a $3.5 billion dollar deal with Turkey for 109 helicopters.
