November 15, 2013

BRISTOL- Earlier this month, state legislators gathered to present Lake Compounce General Manager, Jerry Brick, with a citation from the Connecticut General Assembly, in recognition for the Boulder Dash being named ‘Best Wooden Roller Coaster in the World’ by Amusement Today.

Organized by State Rep. Whit Betts (R-78), the group of legislators, included State Senator Joe Markley (R-16), and State Representatives Rob Sampson (R-80), Frank Nicastro (D-79), Dave Zoni (D-81), and Chris Wright (D-77). Also present were Southington Town Manager Garry Brumback and Bristol Mayor Art Ward. State Sen. Jason Welch (R-31), House Majority Leader Joe Aresimowicz (D-30), and State Rep. Betty Boukus (D-22), also offered their congratulations but were unable to attend the ceremony because of prior commitments.

“Because of the continued dedication of the management and staff, Lake Compounce continues to demonstrate why this local treasure continues to be one of our state’s leading tourist attractions,” said Betts. “I commend the great work that Jerry Brick and the Lake Compounce employees do throughout the year to ensure that visitors enjoy their experience. I wish them sincere congratulations on their achievement, and I thank them for the contributions they’ve made to enrich our lives, our town, and our local economy.”

Following the citation presentation, the legislators spent the afternoon speaking with Brick during a tour of the park grounds, which included the Haunted Graveyard seasonal Halloween attraction.

“I applaud Jerry Brick for his visionary efforts that brought Boulder Dash and this park international recognition,” said Rep. Nicastro. “Having enjoyed the opportunity to work with Lake Compounce for the past 26 years that I’ve held elected office in Bristol, it is good to know the park is in such capable hands and world recognized.”

The legislators ended their tour with a ride on the “Best Wooden Roller Coaster in the World”, Boulder Dash.

“I’ve been enjoying Lake Compounce for over fifty years, and I’m delighted to say that it’s better than ever, a real asset to our community and a great destination for our families,” said Sen. Markley.

Operating initially as a picnic park in 1846, today, Lake Compounce proudly holds the title of ‘America’s Oldest Amusement Park’. Over 165 years later, the facility has expanded to include the world famous roller coaster, in addition to other roller coasters, attractions and amusements for everyone from the very young, to the young-at-heart.

“Roller Coasters are a great traditional amusement, and there’s no doubt that we have one of the best around at Lake Compounce,” said Rep. Sampson. “With this recognition, it’s now official. I want to congratulate Jerry Brick and everyone at Lake Compounce for their great efforts providing great local amusement and for this unique distinction for the Boulder Dash.”

“Congratulations to Lake Compounce and every employee for this most recent honor,” said Rep. Zoni. “Lake Compounce continues to be a leading tourist attraction in our region of the state as well as providing jobs for so many people and helping our economy along the way.”
“Historically, Lake Compounce is a very special place for many people, young and old,” said Rep. Wright. “This latest tribute serves as a reminder of the dedication and work of the entire staff. I am sure that under the leadership of the current management team, Lake Compounce will continue to grow and provide future generations with joy, happiness and just plain fun.”

Brick stated that over the last 4 years corporate management continues to put significant capital into developing the park. A five-year expansion plan that began last year with the installation of a new, $1 million water slide continued this year with a $250,000 update to the Wildcat roller coaster, and the expansion of the Crocodile Cove Water Park. Continued future planning includes further expansion of the water park, in addition to a campground expansion with cabins, RV grounds, and tent grounds.

Lake Compounce theme park is open May through September. The upcoming Holiday Lights spectacular will begin November 29th and run on weekends through December 22nd.
Lake Compounce is located at 822 Lake Avenue, Bristol, CT 06010.
