HARTFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork) – With gun control reform accomplished, Connecticut state lawmakers now have to figure out how to deal with the over $2 billion deficit in the next two-year budget.

St. Sen. Rob Kane, the ranking Republican on the Appropriations Committee, said higher taxes are out of the question.

“We certainly, on our side of the aisle, would never go for that. I mean, the governor and the Democratic-led majority put forth the largest tax increase in our state’s history two years ago, $1.8 billion, and look where that got us, into another deficit,” he told WCBS 880 Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau.

Kane said, line by line, spending will have to be cut.

“We have a huge pension liability. We have great debt. We continue to put charges on the company credit card,” he said.

He predicted that lawmakers will be forced to go into special session over the summer, maybe even into the fall, to shape a budget that is, for most, at least palatable.
