Hurricane Sandy

Here is the latest update on Hurricane Sandy.

Governor Malloy has asked that all non essential state employees stay home Monday.

It is also suggested that many businesses consider the potential dangers during a major weather event.  
 

Governor Malloy has authorized an extension for registering to vote: the deadline is now Thursday November 1,
2012.
 
From the National Weather Service:

▪ HURRICANE SANDY MOVING UP THE EAST COAST AT THIS TIME
HIGH WIND WARNINGS ISSUED FOR ALL OF CONNECTICUT
MAJOR COASTAL FLOODING EXPECTED
• Sandy is currently a Category I Hurricane.

Sandy is expected to be a very large and dangerous Hybrid when the storm arrives Sunday night and Monday. Hybrid storms do not act like hurricanes and do not weaken over cold waters. Sandy is forecast to move slowly and impact our area for up to 36 hours with very strong winds, finally departing our area Wednesday morning.

The NWS has issued High Wind Warnings for the potential of very strong winds sustained at 40 – 60 MPH and gusting to 60 – 80 MPH along the coast and in the higher elevations at times. Coastal Flood Watches have been issued for the potential for major coastal flooding.
 
Transportation
 
Trains
Shutdown of New Haven Line service starts after 7pm train departures this evening.

Amtrak intercity and Shore Line East service will also shutdown in that timeframe.

No New Haven Line, Amtrak intercity or Shore Line East service Monday.
 
Busses
No regular scheduled CTTRANSIT local or express bus services will operate on Monday, October 29.

Service will be suspended for the safety of our customers and transit employees.

Decisions regarding operations on Tuesday, October 30 will be made based on the conditions that result from the hurricane.
 
Airports
Concessions at Bradley will operate in accordance with airline schedules.

Utilities

AT&T
AT&T has a dedicated telephone number for the public to call as first contact if they have any service problem, or need to report a damaged pole, downed wire or other hazardous condition involving AT&T facilities, please report it to 1-800-280-3857.

CL & P
Requested 2,000 outside lineworkers, with many enroute to CT

Approximately 400 CL&P lineworkers
300 tree-trimming workers are ready to respond
400 damage assessors
750 wires-down staff
500 service crew workers have been requested
They are actively seeking an additional 2,000 contractor lineworkers and 700 tree contractors
All CL&P warehouses are stocked for a restoration event
Sandbagging is complete at two coastal substations (Branford and South End station in Stamford)

United Illuminating
UI and confirmed contractor resources include:

289 line construction personnel
170 line clearance personnel
64 service personnel
206 damage assessors
UI will send a Make Safe Crew to the Towns consisting of (1) Line Crew and (1) Line Clearance Crew to each Town upon request

2-1-1 is staffing the State EOC. In anticipation of increased demand for information, a prominent Hurricane Sandy link is on our homepage at www.211ct.org.

As community resources such as shelters, charging stations etc. are opened, this information will be available on the site and over the phone via 2-1-1.
