At Capitol, Sen. McLachlan Welcome Cadets from New Fairfield’s Civil Air Patrol Program

Cadets involved in New Fairfield High School’s Civil Air Patrol program visited State Sen. Michael McLachlan on April 26 at the State Capitol.

Sen. McLachlan, who is a major in the Civil Air Patrol, took the students on a tour of the State Capitol, bringing them out onto the floor of the Senate Chamber.

The Civil Air Patrol is the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, a nonprofit organization that has 57,000 members nationwide. There are five major tenets to the cadet program: leadership, aerospace education, physical fitness, character development and cadet activities.

Cadets are taught military drills and ceremony, and learn about flight. The program helps students prepare physically and mentally for a career in the military. It provides a career alternative for students who are college bound as well as for students who do not plan on going to college.

“We are very proud of these young men and women,” Sen. McLachlan said. “Through the Civil Air Patrol program, the cadets learn respect, leadership, discipline and other skills and values that will help them succeed. It was my pleasure to show them around the State Capitol and to answer their questions about state government. The tremendous success of this program is the direct result of the hard work of so many parents, teachers and educators in our communities.”
