Here’s How You Can Help Me Bring Gas Prices Down
October 21, 2011
Connecticut now has the highest gas taxes in the continental United States.
You are paying 53 cents per gallon in state taxes on every gallon of gasoline you pump.
Most people don’t know it, but Connecticut actually levies two taxes on gas sold in Connecticut. The official gas tax is 25 cents per gallon. The state also levies a second hidden tax, called the “gross receipts tax” on the wholesale price of gas. This second tax is calculated based on the price of gasoline and, as August began, averaged about 28 cents per gallon.
To add insult to injury, the hidden gas tax is computed at about 7.5 % of the wholesale price of gas. This means that as gas prices increase, so does the hidden gas tax. In the last year, as gas prices in Connecticut have risen by about 1.40/gallon from their low 2010 point, the hidden gas tax has increased from 16 cents per gallon to 28 cents per gallon.
Incredibly, there is no limit to how high the hidden gas tax may go! For every dollar price increase in gas, the hidden gas tax will increase by almost eight cents per gallon.
It’s time to put a limit on this nonsense!
I have introduced a bill to cap the hidden gas tax so that this tax will not continue to increase. This should save as much as 10 cents per gallon immediately and could save even more if gas prices continue to increase.
You can help me get this legislation passed.
How?
By signing my “Cap the Hidden Gas Tax” petition below.
Consider this: Massachusetts consumers pay an average of 25 cents per gallon less than consumers in Connecticut because of lower gas taxes in that state. Rhode Island taxes are lower than Connecticut by 19 cents per gallon. Why is Connecticut’s tax man so greedy? Let’s reduce our taxes to what’s fair and reasonable. Please join me in my fight to cap the hidden gas tax here in Connecticut!

I have already started looking to relocate my family. There is so much greed and corruption in CT and I am tired of thinking that my home will not be paid off til I’m 70. Stop The Greed and Mismanagment in CT. With all the taxes we pay why are we always in the RED?
xxxxxxxx,
If things don’t change, we are going to have to move out of CT because we are drowning in debt!! Stop sucking us dry!!

It was nice hearing your views at tonight’s meeting. Thank you for your work on this and other issues.
Carolyn Goodridge,
I know that most of my town’s citizens drive to MA to get gas cheaper. I agree that the tax should be known, and it should be designated where it is going. Gas is necessary to get a job, and to get to work for those with jobs. CT is too highly priced.
Glenn H. Stevens,
Carrie Olewnik,
If we are to compete with other states we need a flat playing field. With the price of Ct gas so high the bottom line for business owners is high. We need jobs, good paying jobs for this states which would lower those who need state assistence.
gary nichols,
please dont let this fall by the way. we need help.
