On January 10, State Senator Rob Kane (R-32) was honored by the Connecticut chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP).

In a ceremony in the Legislative Office Building, Senator Kane was presented with a “Legislative Achievement Award” recognizing his dedication to the state’s AARP community.

In 2010, Senator Kane successfully pushed for the re-opening of the state’s Alzheimer’s respite care program to eligible new applicants.

“The Alzheimer’s respite care program program offers a lifeline to those who care for their loved ones at home,” Senator Kane said. “Our goal is to make it more feasible for victims of this horrible disease to stay home for as long as possible.  These respite services save taxpayers money by preventing, or at least delaying, the need to provide more expensive nursing home care.”

More information about the Connecticut Statewide Respite Program is available by calling 1-800-994-9422, or by visiting the state Department of Social Services website and clicking on the programs and services for elders tab.

“I will continue to be an advocate for programs which help seniors return to the community such as Money Follows the Person,” Senator Kane said.  “Most seniors I have spoken to have no wish to be in a nursing home, and in Hartford I plan to continue the fight to help seniors stay in their homes.  When seniors stay in their homes, the state saves large amounts of money.  There really is no downside to home care.”

Kane represents the 32nd Senatorial District, which includes the communities of Bethlehem, Bridgewater, Middlebury, Oxford, Seymour, Southbury, Thomaston, Roxbury, Watertown and Woodbury.
