Sen. Kane & Rep. Labriola Announce Funding Available For Route 67/Riggs Street Traffic Light In Oxford

November 5, 2010

Senator Rob Kane (R-32) and Representative David Labriola (R-131) said that funding has become available to defray the cost of installing a traffic signal at the Route 67/Riggs Street intersection in Oxford.

“We have heard from many Oxford residents who strongly believe that a traffic signal should be installed at the Route 67/Riggs Street intersection. Just last month, there was a fatal accident about 1,000 feet north of the intersection and, even though this tragedy did not occur right at the spot in question, it illustrates the need to make whatever improvements are necessary to improve safety on that road,” said Senator Kane.

Rep. Labriola agreed, adding “A traffic signal at this intersection will substantially lower the speed motorists travel and increase the safety of everyone that uses this stretch of roadway. It’s a positive development from every perspective and I’m pleased the DOT has responded to our concerns.”

Senator Kane and Representative Labriola said that they, along with other government officials, were notified by the state Department of Transportation (DOT) that funding for the project has recently become available. Both Senator Kane and Rep. Labriola said they look forward to working with the DOT, Oxford municipal officials and other interested parties to quickly move the project along.

In addition to announcing the availability of funding to defray the cost of the Route 67/Riggs Street traffic signal, the two legislators said they are happy to report that DOT plans to review conditions at the intersection of Route 67 and Governor’s Hill Road to see if there are any safety concerns there.

Senator Kane and Representative Labriola said they are grateful to the many Oxford residents who have contacted their legislative offices with concerns, and encourage them to keep in touch.
